Antique Diamonds vs Lab Grown: Which Should You Buy?

Let me say the honest part first, since I sell one side of this argument: lab grown diamonds are real diamonds. Chemically and optically they are the same stone, they cost a fraction of the natural price, and if your only goal is the biggest, whitest stone for the money, a lab grown brilliant wins and you do not need my permission to buy one.

What the price tag does not tell you is what happens to that value afterwards, and what you give up in character. That is where antique diamonds make their case, and it is a strong one.

Why do lab grown diamonds lose their value?

Because supply is unlimited and production keeps getting cheaper. Lab grown retail prices have fallen dramatically year after year, and a stone bought today competes tomorrow with a newer, cheaper identical one. There is no meaningful secondhand market: jewellers have little reason to buy back a stone they can order new for less. None of this makes lab grown a bad purchase; it makes it a consumer product, like electronics. Buy it to enjoy it, and count the money as spent.

Why do antique diamonds hold value better?

Three reasons. Supply: every antique diamond that exists has already been cut, and the number only shrinks. Demand: collectors and a growing group of buyers actively want old mine cuts, old European cuts and rose cuts, precisely because no new ones are made. Character: a hand-cut stone is one of one, with its slightly off-center culet and its broad, slow fire. I will not promise you appreciation; diamonds are not an investment plan. But an antique stone participates in a real market with real scarcity, and a lab grown stone does not.

Which is more ethical and sustainable?

Both sides sell a clean conscience, and both oversimplify. Lab grown avoids new mining, which is genuinely good, but growing diamonds takes serious energy, and "sustainable" marketing rarely shows the power bill. An antique diamond was mined generations ago under standards nobody would defend today; that history is real and worth being honest about. What is equally real: buying it today extracts nothing new from the ground. It is reuse in its purest form, the same logic as any antique. If footprint is your deciding factor, a stone that has already existed for 150 years is hard to beat.

So which should you buy?

Buy lab grown if you want maximum size and whiteness per dollar, you are certain resale will never matter to you, and modern perfection is the look you love. Buy antique if you want a stone with a history and a face of its own, a real secondhand market behind it, and nothing newly mined on your conscience. And if you are deciding for an engagement ring: the antique will still be the rarer object in fifty years, guaranteed, because they are not making any more of them.

They were mined long ago, often under conditions that would not be accepted today, and buying one today funds no new mining at all. Most buyers weigh that as the most sustainable diamond choice available; the honest framing is reuse, not purity.

Is an antique diamond good for an engagement ring?

Yes, with one practical note: antique cuts glow rather than glitter, and open culets and thinner girdles deserve a protective setting and a jeweller who knows old stones. In exchange you get a ring nobody else has.
