It depends on where you stand when you say "I do". In the United States, Britain and France, the wedding ring goes on the left hand's ring finger. In Denmark, Norway, Germany, Russia and much of central and eastern Europe, it goes on the right. Neither is more correct; both traditions are centuries old, and the map of them is one of jewelry's most charming accidents. As a Danish dealer selling mostly to American buyers, I live on both sides of this map daily.

The fine print is half the fun: in several countries the hand differs by religion or region, Dutch Protestants and Catholics traditionally chose differently, and Scandinavian practice varies family by family. There is no jewelry police; there is only what your people do, and what you decide.
Why the left hand at all?
Blame a beautiful anatomical error. The Romans believed a vein, the vena amoris, ran straight from the left ring finger to the heart, so the ring belonged there, sealing love onto the bloodstream. The vein does not exist, all fingers drain alike, but the poetry outlived the anatomy by two thousand years. Right-hand traditions carry their own logic: the right hand is the hand of oaths, the one raised to swear, and in several languages the word for "right" doubles as the word for "correct". Both hands, in other words, hold an argument.
Where does the engagement ring go?
Usually the same finger, with choreography. In left-hand countries the engagement ring arrives on the left, and at the wedding the band joins it, worn beneath, closer to the heart. Danish tradition runs its own lovely sequence: the engagement ring is often a plain gold band worn on the left, moved to the right at the wedding, and in many marriages both partners wear engagement bands from the start, an equality that predates the international trend by generations. Some brides stack all rings on one finger; some split hands entirely. The tradition is a menu, and the couple orders.

Does it matter which hand an antique ring was worn on?
For fit, sometimes: hands differ slightly, and a band worn sixty years on one hand is subtly shaped by it. For meaning, not at all: an antique wedding band carries its history regardless of which hand receives it next. What antique bands do carry, wonderfully often, is evidence: engraved initials and wedding dates inside the band, Scandinavian hallmarks giving the exact year, wear patterns from a lifetime of one hand's work. When buyers ask whether it is strange to marry with a band that already held a marriage, my answer is the opposite: a ring that kept its promise once has references.
