Antique Cherry Red Lab Created Ruby Ring Size 8.75 US 18K Gold Sweden 1923
Just wow - an antique cherry red lab created ruby, big and juicy as a ripe summer cherry, set in warm 18K gold in Sweden in 1923. I could not stop looking at her when she landed on my desk.
The stone is a large emerald cut in that deep, glowing cherry red that only the early lab created rubies have. She was grown when the science was still brand new and marvelous - a real ruby in chemistry, structure and hardness, just born in a French flame instead of the ground, and after a century she is a genuine antique in her own right. I have written about these fascinating stones here: Lab-Created Sapphires in Antique Jewelry
She carries her full suite of Swedish hallmarks inside - you can see them in the last photo, crisp as the day they were struck, dating her to 1923. If you love reading those little stamps as much as I do, you can decode every Swedish mark at The Hallmark Society
The shoulders are the sweetest scrolled ribbons of gold, and she weighs around 6.5 grams - very substantial and robust, with that lovely reassuring weight on the finger. She fits like a size 8.75 US - a rare joy for anyone who usually finds antique rings too small.
She is in excellent condition, the stone intact and crisp. You can tell she has been treasured - kept safe like the treasure she is and only worn on special occasions through her century. Full honesty as always: there are marks on one side shoulder. You will not notice them when she is on, and the price is set accordingly.
Please don't wait on this one - a century old cherry like her comes around once.
