Finger symbolism is real, old, and almost entirely inconsistent between one century and the next. The Romans, the medieval church, Victorian etiquette manuals and modern astrology all assigned meanings, and they disagree with each other constantly. What follows is what each tradition actually said, followed by the practical advice that matters more: which finger suits which ring.
Finger by finger
The fourth finger, left hand. The wedding finger across most of the West, on the strength of a Roman belief in the vena amoris, a vein running directly from that finger to the heart. The anatomy is wrong, the tradition survived anyway, and it is far from universal: Germany, Russia, Poland, Norway, India and much of Eastern Europe use the right hand. The index finger. Historically the finger of authority and status. In the Renaissance, sumptuary laws in some cities restricted who could wear rings here at all, and bishops' rings and signets of office belong on it. A ring on the index is seen more often by the wearer than any other, since it faces you when your hand is at rest.
The middle finger. The least freighted with meaning, which makes it the practical choice for a large statement ring. It is the longest and strongest finger, and it carries weight and width better than any other.

The thumb. Historically a display of wealth and independence, since thumb rings must be substantial to fit, and archers wore them functionally. Now, mostly, a matter of personal style, and one of the best places for a heavy antique band that is too large for a finger.

The practical version
Match the ring to the finger's shape. Wide bands look best on longer fingers and shorten short ones. Tall, top-heavy rings suit the middle finger, where they are supported. Delicate rings get lost on the middle finger and look right on the ring or little finger.
Sizes differ across one hand by more than people expect, usually by a full size or two between fingers, and the dominant hand runs slightly larger. Measure the actual finger you intend to wear it on, using the method in how to measure your ring size.
Antique rings are often small, which decides the finger for you more often than tradition does.
